Volunteer
Support live performance and become part of our Portsmouth, NH theater community

The Players’ Ring is a nonprofit art organization, and we rely on the passion and commitment of volunteers to keep the magic alive. With nearly 200 performances each season, our greatest ongoing need is growing our Front of House Team—the welcoming faces who greet our patrons and help the show run smoothly.
At The Ring, we believe in creating a kind, collaborative, and inclusive space—for audiences, artists, and volunteers alike.

FAQs
What are the main responsibilities?
- Ensuring that the house (lobby, restrooms, and theatre) are in neat condition, setting up concessions and check-in stations.
- Liaising with the Stage Manager to open the house and start the show.
- Welcoming and assisting patrons, handling check-in and ticket sales through our online ticketing platform.
- Accounting for cash sales.
- Ensuring the house is left in neat condition at the end of the show.
What do I get out of it?
-
You can enjoy free admission to the show you’re volunteering for!
-
You support our theatre while connecting with artists and audience members, becoming a valued part of the Ring community!
-
How long is a typical shift?
It depends on the duration of the show. We ask volunteers to come at least one hour before the show starts and stay until all patrons have left. A good average is 2.5 / 4 hours.
How many shifts do I need to commit to?
You can sign up for as many or as few shifts as you want and can.
A good average is one shift per production, so that you can watch as many shows as possible, but that’s not a rule! (Volunteers who join less frequently may need a refresher on the tasks.)
We also ask that, once you sign up for a shift, you let us know as soon as possible if you can no longer make it, so we can find a substitute.
Will I be alone during the shift?
We aim to have two people for each shift, ideally a more experienced volunteer paired with a newer volunteer. However, sometimes that is not possible, so once you feel comfortable, you might be asked to cover a shift by yourself.
What type of skills or personality traits are required?

Kindness and good communication skills. We want our patrons to have a good time and be treated warmly (sometimes patience is required too!)
