The Casting Magic

Many theatres ask actors to prepare a monologue. Sometimes the instructions are more specific: dramatic, comedic, Shakespeare, contemporary…

At the Ring—and always with the blessing of each director—we prefer to ask performers to simply bring themselves and be ready to play.

Rather than watching something (over)polished, we like to see them cold read pages from the actual script for the very first time.

How do they respond to something unfamiliar?

How do they adapt to direction?

How do they listen to one another?

Then come callbacks, availability checks, offers, and finally… the announcement.

I am always proud when we announce a cast, but especially when I see a mix of familiar and new faces.

Returning artists tell us we’re building a place creative people want to come back to.

New artists reassure us that our doors remain open—that people continue to discover the Ring and feel it might be a place where they can work, have fun, belong.
