The less visible designer

Ode to the Prop Designers (also called Prop Managers or Prop Masters, but that’s a bit outdated).

Their work is essential, yet often less visible because we—as audience members—take so much for granted.

Oh yeah, a pencil.

A sandwich, of course.

A broom. A skull. A book.

Prop work is detective work.

It starts with reading the script for hidden cues—what’s named, what’s implied, what’s not there at all but actually needed.

Then comes the hunt: borrowing, scavenging, purchasing (rarely), and—often—fabricating.

It takes mad-scientist energy, endless how-to searches, craftsmanship, and invention.

Sometimes the goal is to wow.

More often, the magic is to not wow at all: everything feels so right that no one even notices.

So.

Let’s grab that old-looking goblet (probably a Goodwill find), fill it with that delicious chardonnay (actually, apple juice), and raise a toast to the Prop People.

From my Ring-shaped heart, thank you.
