I don’t respond well to swearing on stage.
I consistently wince. No matter the context.
That said, I’ve also learned to ask myself: is it gratuitous or purposeful? Is it there for shock or an easy laugh, or is it grounded in character? Does it somehow serve the story?
I can’t say every instance of profanity at our theatre rises to that standard. But I can guarantee you that we ask the question. Every time.
Which brings me to another debatable topic: content & language advisories. My perspective is layered. It’s an important tool— to be used with caution. Because part of what – in my opinion – makes theatre’s impact unique is that it asks us into the unknown.
Yes. A complex conversation for a dozen lines. But I felt compelled to put it out there.
