One of the realities of the theatre industry is that much of the action happens when everyone else is off.
Performances take place at night and on weekends.
At The Ring, rehearsals do too, because most of our incredible artists also have day jobs.
A great deal still happens between 9 and 5.
But much more begins when the rest of the world is winding down.
The fact that this is also our passion complicates things:
You work hard, but you’re also enjoying yourself, which makes it so easy to miss the moment when you should really step away.
I think about this at 10:30 on a Monday night, driving home after three hours of auditions plus a ninety-minute meeting.
Far from mastering that balance, my colleagues and I do talk about it.
Remind one another whenever we can.
This profession – more than others – runs on humanity.
And us humans—like it or not—do their best work (and thinking, and living) when there’s room for rest, fun, and renewal.
So let’s keep trying.
