The Man Who Laughs

Written by Victor Hugo.
Set during the shadowy reign of Queen Anne, this gothic horror-romance follows Gwynplaine, the most famous clown in England. His acrobatic talents and broad, omnipresent grin delight peasants and noblemen alike. But this clown can never remove his makeup. His crowd-pleasing grin is a curse, carved into his face when he was a child at the behest of a cruel, vindictive king. When a beautiful duchess attends his show, a secret from Gwynplaine’s past is revealed, a secret that threatens to destroy everything he has built, and everyone he holds dear.
Fully adapted and devised by the Ensemble from The Man Who Laughs by Victor Hugo, with inspiration from the 1928 black & white silent movie The Man Who Laughs, directed by Paul Leni.
World Premiere.

AND THIS IS WHAT THE AUDIENCE HAS TO SAY ABOUT THE SHOW:
I loved THE MAN WHO LAUGHS! I was so intrigued by the thought of a “silent play”. I was a bit apprehensive about the horror factor, as I stay away from all clowns and have never watched a horror movie. Things that happened in the story were indeed horrific, but it was heart-wrenching, sweet, and romantic. Words were not needed when you looked into the characters’ eyes. The music and sound/lighting effects made for a perfect setting, and the dog was amazing!” Melody C.

“I want to congratulate you about this production. It was such an adventurous idea and the cast and crew pulled it off beautifully. We were riveted throughout the show and didn’t miss dialogue at all. We have been telling everyone to see it.” Sue F.

“Even though the main character is the prototype for the Joker, this play is no joke!!! The story is simple, sweet, and with a lot of heart. The monochromatic set design is beautiful. All the actors are fantastic! My sister and I both loved The Man Who Laughs and we hope you do too! Check it out this Halloween season!” Heather M.

This was one of the most dramatic, thought provoking and professional plays I’ve seen. I loved the unique story and the acting (loved the jester) was superb! What a creative use of stage, sound effects and character roles. Loved the dog too! I may see it again! A longer run, perhaps? What a great venue and organization we have in Portsmouth. Thank you for your hard work, cast and crew.” Barbara S.

“This production is a truly unique piece of art and a must-see for both theater and movie-lovers. Reimagining a silent film on stage and maintaining honest storytelling with no dialogue is an incredible task that this cast lives up to beautifully. Plus, the haunting energy is perfect for Halloween. Don’t miss it!” Heather H.

“For those who love live theater, this is a MUST-SEE experience” Greg G.

“The performance was an exciting challenge for both the audience and the actors. They created the feeling that we were watching an old silent movie. It is what I love about the Ring. They are willing to take on the challenge, and they do it well. It one of the things that makes this theatre so wonderful and unique.” Dean P.
