Characters:

Hazel (F, 60s) A disciplined, pragmatic woman, Hazel is deeply concerned with order, routine, and responsibility. She has built a carefully managed life in the wake of the nuclear catastrophe, maintaining control through domestic structure and denial. Beneath her composed exterior, however, lies deep fear and resentment—especially toward Rose’s sudden reappearance and the moral choices being asked of her. She is fiercely protective of her family and resistant to disruption.

Rose (F, 60s) An independent, sharp, and enigmatic presence, Rose arrives unexpectedly after years away. She is less concerned with domesticity and more focused on ethical responsibility. Calm but forceful, Rose brings with her a reckoning—not just about the past relationships among the three, but also about the legacy they’ve left behind. Her presence forces both Hazel and Robin to confront hard truths about themselves, their choices, and the world they helped shape.

Robin (M, 60s) This role has been cast Robin is Hazel’s husband and a former nuclear engineer. Once confident and physically capable, he is now quietly restless and conflicted, trying to mask guilt and uncertainty with charm and jokes. He often seeks escape—literally and emotionally—from the weight of the past. Robin is caught between two women and two versions of himself: the devoted husband and the idealistic scientist who must now face the consequences of his work.

Synopsis

In a remote seaside cottage in the wake of a nuclear disaster, two retired physicists, Hazel and Robin, live a quiet life of careful routine. Their world is upended by the unexpected arrival of Rose, a former colleague they haven’t seen in decades. As memories resurface and tensions build, the three grapple with past choices, present consequences, and a moral dilemma that could change everything. With wit, emotional depth, and haunting relevance, The Children is a taut and powerful exploration of responsibility, legacy, and what we owe to future generations.
