Players’ Ring Invites Play Submissions
The Players’ Ring in Portsmouth invites playwrights to submit plays for consideration for its 21st Season. The Season begins in September 2012 and the Late Night Summer Series begins in late June and runs through August. While the “regular” season features full length works, the Late Night Series is more appropriate for experimental works, shorter plays and one acts. As the name implies, the Late Night shows begins at 10:30 pm on Fridays and Saturdays, at 9:30 on Sundays.
Playwrights should be aware that the Players’ Ring is an intimate “black box” space and may not be suitable for plays with elaborate technical requirements or large casts. To quote Michael J. Curtiss of The Granite Stage, “There’s no room for lavish sets, elaborate light plots or other technical hugger-muggery; everything staged at The Ring is scaled down and distilled to its essence, requiring the audience pay more attention to the craftsmanship within the plays being staged there, rather than sitting back and allowing the sound and fury of big-cast shows offered at larger venues to lull them into a false sense of having witnessed quality theatre.”
Playwrights are also invited to the annual Producers’ Meeting which is scheduled for February 20, 2012 at 7:00 pm at the Ring. At this meeting production companies and playwrights “pitch” their work to the Players’ Ring Board of Directors and Artistic Committee. Scripts that have already been submitted do not have to be presented at the meeting, but a live pitch is encouraged. The Producers’ Meeting gives writers the opportunity to meet other artists including actors, directors and producers who might be interested in collaborating on future productions.
The submission should consist of three copies of the script whether mailed to the Ring or presented at the Producers’ Meeting. Scripts may also be submitted electronically to djmrllo@aol.com.
