Let the Players’ Ring Inspire Your Midsummer Night Dreams
Portsmouth, NH – During July & August, the Players’ Ring of Portsmouth invites you to inspire your midsummer nigh dreams with its late night series. Hosting a different show every two weeks, the Players’ Ring opens this popular late night series with The Adequate Player’s production of Steven Dietz’s “The Nina Variations” from July 6th to July 15th with shows on Friday and Saturday at 10:30 PM and on Sunday at 9:30 PM. Tickets for general admission are $10 for members, $12 for non-members. Student and senior tickets are $8 for members, $10 for non-members. Reservations are suggested and can be made by calling the Players’ Ring at (603) 436-8123.
Inspired by Anton Chekhov’s “The Seagull,” Dietz’s “The Nina Variations” takes two of the theater’s most famous lovers, lifts them from the ensemble of one play, and drops them into a theatrical production of their own. John Geoffrion and Kate Kosteva will play Treplev and his muse, the young actress Nina. Over the course of several dozen short scenes, they re-live their relationship, explore alternate outcomes, delve deeper into their psyches, and even occasionally switch roles. A familiarity with Chekhov and the “Seagull” is not necessary since the themes of love and loss are universal.
The Nina variations will be followed from July 20th to July 29th by “I remember You,” “Say No More,” and “One Great Big Night” by acclaimed local writers Susan Chamberlain, Michael Kimball, and David Mauriello. On the weekend of August 3rd, the locally renowned improve troupe Stranger Than Fiction will take the stage with their latest project “Time Battle” to be followed on August 10th, 11th, and 12th by Grandma June’s Sewing Circle Sketch Comedy from Chicago. The series will close with Lars Trodson’s “Going to See the River Man, Going to Tell Him All I Can” from August 17th to the 26th.
