Two elliptical but mesmerizing plays, by two playwrights, brought to life by two actors, through the unifying vision of one director. The Zoo Story is Edward Albee's first play, written in 1958. It introduced a clear and important dramatic talent and was much performed in the sixties by university drama departments and regional theaters, but it is not now often done. You may recall the names of its characters - Peter and Jerry - but not quite remember what all the fuss was about. There is, however, still quite a fuss to be made in their chance (?) encounter in New York's Central Park.
A Number, by Caryl Churchill, was written in 2002 and confirms its author's reputation as a playwright for the 21st century. Ostensibly, it's about human cloning. But the questions it asks, the dilemmas it raises, for a father and his son(s?) - and for us - reach deep into the extremes of human experience, just as The Zoo Story did almost fifty years earlier. The old, the new, the same. The more things change.
With Chris Curtis and Alan Huisman.
