Players' Ring Presents
Death at the Dorcey
by John Tumulty
directed by George Hosker
Death at the Dorcey, winner of the 2004 F. Gary Newton Playwriting Competition, is a comic-thriller in the spirit of Agatha Christie. The year is 1938 and Sylvia, the owner of the once celebrated hotel is in a fix. At the edge of the second World War, travelers now prefer to stay in town rather then venture to the Grand Hotels on the coast. The hotel is falling into disrepair with leaky roofs and an incompetent staff. Though many have chosen not to return to the faded beauty of the hotel, several guests return year after year including a retired Major, the local cleric, an internationally known writer and Winston Churchill himself. When Sylvia receives a call alerting her to the fact that famous columnist Ty Robbins will stay the weekend she is sure that a good word from him will help her restore the hotel to its former glory. Before Ty Robbins can print a word however he is murdered by someone in the hotel. The result is a comic twist of a who-dun-it that will leave audiences guessing and laughing.
